Charming, nostalgic Lawrenceville is home to a number of historic sites and buildings. The Lawrenceville town center and the downtown Courthouse Square sit on land purchased in 1821 for $200 by Elisha Winn from John Breedlove. The Gwinnett History Museum is located just off of the Courthouse Square in the Lawrenceville Female Seminary, one of the oldest buildings in Gwinnett County. The Gwinnett History Museum houses exhibits on farm life, textiles, religion, traditional music, and the early history of Gwinnett County. Special events, research assistance, and classes on quilting, spinning, weaving and dulcimer are offered by the Heritage Programming and Preservation Office, also located in the Lawrenceville Female Seminary building. Take a tour of the area’s Plantation Houses including the Elisha Winn home and the Lander-Cain House.



Gwinnett County is one of the Atlanta metropolitan area’s largest counties. It was named for Button Gwinnett, one of the signers of the Declaration of the Independence. Ironically, Gwinnett never set foot in his namesake county, which was created in 1818. Originally a farming and railroad community, Gwinnett County’s economy was changed immeasurably by the Civil War battles that raged in Atlanta. After the war, tourism became a major industry in Gwinnett County, especially when Buford Dam was built and Lake Sidney Lanier was formed. Gwinnett County was named the “Fastest Growing County in the U.S.” during the 1980s.



Today, many Fortune 500 companies are located in the county. The area is known for its excellent shopping, restaurants and golf, as well as quaint towns and picturesque scenery. Gwinnett County parks are wonderful places to explore woodlands, lakes, meadows, streams and gently rolling hills. County parks include Bethesda, a 160-acre community park with ball fields, a playground, a walking trail encircling a small lake, and picnic areas. The Gwinnett Senior Center is located here.



Rhodes Jordan Park is located in Lawrenceville. An outdoor aquatic center, a gymnasium, tennis courts, trails, ball fields, picnic pavilions and playgrounds provide recreation and relaxation for everyone. Collins Hill Park is a 76-acre park with a lake, open spaces and a walking trail. It also has ball fields, courts, playgrounds and an aquatic center. 700-acre Tribble Mill Regional Park is Gwinnett County’s largest park.



For fans of professional sports, the Arena Football League's Georgia Force play at the Arena in Gwinnett County from March through May. The Gwinnett Gladiators, a minor league hockey team, pass the puck on the Arena ice from October to February. The BellSouth Classic Golf Tournament is held each year at the TPC at Sugarloaf.



Students in Lawrenceville are served by Gwinnett County Public Schools, the largest school system in the state. In fact, the system is the county’s largest employer. In addition to 90 elementary, middle and high schools, GCPS maintains technical, special education and alternative schools, as well as Gwinnett Technical College for post-secondary education. Other nearby higher educational options include Georgia Tech University and the University of Georgia.
